Democracy and local government
In Denmark parliamentary elections are held once every four years. The council organises all electoral procedures. The voting age is 18.
Every fourth year local elections are held in the Municipality. Lyngby-Taarbæk’s council has 21 members, meets once a month and is open to the public. The council committees also meet once a month. The mayor and the vice-mayors are elected by the council, which also appoints members for the political committees. There are 7 committees and 4 directories in the municipal administration.

Lyngby Town Hall
Lyngby Town Hall was inaugurated in 1941. The two architects Ib Martin Jensen and Hans Erling Langkilde designed it.
The council’s offices are spread throughout the town centre. The Financial and Technical departments are at the Town Hall. The Schools and Leisure department and The Social and Health department are in the Main Administration inside the Lyngby Town Center building on Toftebæksvej 12. The town library is on Lyngby Hovedgade 28.
Children
Over 3.000 children aged six or less receive day-care in one of the 54 municiple day-care or nursery centres.
Here children from the area are provided with exciting and varied daily activities. All centres have a parents’ committee, who co-operate with the centre staff to provide close contact to the children’s parents.
Secondary School
Ca. 5.000 children - from 6 years and above - receive education in Lyngby-Taarbæk’s municipal schools. In Denmark, education is compulsory up to 9th grade, but children are also offered one year of a 10th year at secondary school.
The council and elected school bodies run all schools and all teachers are professionally trained.
Youth clubs are provided for children from 6 – 18 years in the afternoon after school.
The elderly
The number of people over the age of 67 will increase considerably in the near future. The services provided by the Municipality aim to ensure that the elderly can remain at home as long as they prefer to, while feeling themselves secure.
There are 8 homes for the elderly with about 500 residences, 2 daytime centres and about 400 suitable senior citizens housing centres in the area. Senior citizens societies provide a number of entertainments and artistic events.
Leisure and Sport
There are all sorts of sports activities provided by the municipality, such as basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, handball, football, self-defence, archery and shooting.
Riding is a very popular pastime, and people are particularly fond of riding in the Deerpark in Klampenborg (Dyrehaven).
There are both indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
The Municipality has more than 200 private clubs and societies.
Public utilities and environment
The Municipal authorities are responsible for all aspects of town and environmental planning.
The plan for the Municipality is revised every fourth year, and new local plans are drawn up when the need arises. The council tries to maintain a reasonable balance between the extent of single-family housing, flats, offices and other types of buildings.
The Technical and Enviroment Committee administrate the environmental laws and regulations and ensure that companies follow them. It also co-operates with the companies’ owners in planning future improvements, contributing to the maintenance of a clean environment in Lyngby-Taarbæk.
Trade
Lyngby-Taarbæk is a modern Municipality, active in the provision of jobs, trade facilities and educational opportunities. Many large companies have chosen to place their businesses in the area, and educational centres such as the Danish Technical University, the Lyngby Technical School and the Lyngby Centre for Vocational Education attract many students to the area too.
The main Lyngby Shopping Centre (Lyngby Storcenter) and the Lyngby Main Street (Lyngby Hovedgade) provide a magnet for shoppers and tradesmen from neighbouring municipalities and beyond.
Lyngby Station and the Station Square (Jernbanepladsen) are important junctions both for trains and buses, making it very convenient for commuters, students and shoppers.
Culture
The Municipality has many cultural and natural attractions, among them the Danish National Museum’s departments in Brede and the Open Air Museum (Frilandsmuseet). There is also the Deer Park (Dyrehaven), with its Hermitage Castle (Eremitageslottet) and its entertainment park (Dyrehavsbakken), and the racetrack at Klampenborg (Galopbanen).
It is also possible to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the area from the local ferry that sails on the lakes or from a rented canoe, which can be paddled down the Mill River (Mølleåen).
The former Country House at Sophienholm now houses art exhibitions. It overlooks the Bagsværd Lake and is situated in a beautiful park.
Lyngby Cultural Centre (Lyngby Kulturhus) has halls for concerts and theatre and a cinema with rooms for 11 movies. The house is decorated with modern Danish art. The Cultural Centre is situated in the middle of Kgs. Lyngby.
Next to the old Lyngby Church you will find the Peasants' Town (Bondebyen). Here you will see thatched cottages, whose history goes back to the 17th Century.
