Danish courses for foreigners – self-supporting

If you are a foreigner residing in Lyngby-Taarbæk municipal who wish to learn the Danish language and improve your understanding of the Danish society, you have the possibility to enroll in a study programme in Danish courses.

Basically, you are entitled to Danish courses if you are …

  • A foreigner, above the age of 18 and has a residence permit in Denmark or according to existing law have the right to stay in Denmark without a residence permit. Foreigner below 18 of age where the municipal has not been able to refer to other relevant Danish education can also be referred through the Lyngby-Taarbæk municipal.
  • A residing Greenlander and Faeroese, who do not master the Danish language to an extent that he or she can function in the Danish society.
  • Danish citizens above 18 of age, who because of long term residence in a foreign country does not master the master the Danish language to an extent that he or she can function in the Danish society.

A study program in Danish consists of six modules. Each module is past by a module test that must be passed in order to continue onto the next module. The study program as a whole is completed by a state controlled exam. Both day and evening courses are available at most language schools.

A study program is equal to 1.2 man-year and you’ve three years to complete your study program. Within this three-year period the municipal covers the cost, beside from an administration fee of dkk. 500,- per module. After the three-year period you must cover the costs yourself. Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipal cooperates withSprogcenter Hellerup (see link to the right), whereto the majority of students are referred. However, as self-employed you have the right to choose another language school if you wish to.
